Portrait and Figurative Painting with a Limited Palette with Dominique Medici

$395

with Dominique Medici

Calendar Jul 13, 2024 at 10 am

Saturday and Sunday, July 13th and 14th, 2024

10:00 am to 4:00 pm

This is an oil painting workshop open to all levels but some experience is helpful.

I am excited to welcome Dominique Medici back to teach a portrait and figurative painting workshop at PFA Studio.

Dominique is widely respected for her beautiful portraits and her teaching ability. I know she is good because I have taken several workshops from her myself.

In this Portrait and Figure painting class, we work from a live model and learn how to demystify portrait and figure painting by breaking down the pose with a manageable and systematic 4-step process. We learn how to accurately mix any color by working with a limited palette of 7 colors. The primary palette will deepen our understanding of the relationship between hue value and chroma. We will learn how to mix flesh tones in 3 simple steps. The First Day will be long figure poses with one model. The Second Day will be portrait painting in the morning and clothed figure in the afternoon.

Why Attend this Workshop?

● Watch Dominique demo and show you a process of painting in clear and consecutive steps.

● We will use the basics of color theory to learn a simple color mixing process.

● Learn to mix any color accurately and consistently in just three steps.

● We will learn a 4 step process to break down the portrait into manageable steps.

● Use a chromatic primary palette of 7 colors designed to help you master color.

● Use these skills to create two paintings by the end of the weekend.

Who is this workshop for?

● All skill levels but some previous experience is a plus. Skill level is not that important, although basic drawing and color theory skills are a plus.

● It is for any student interested in receiving instruction and willing to put it into practice.

Learning from the Masters, Still-Life, and Floral Paintings with Robert Johnson

$485

with Robert Johnson

Calendar Aug 23, 2024 at 9 am

Three Day Workshop

August 23rd - 25th, 2024

9:00 am to 4:00 pm

We invite you to seize this exclusive opportunity to learn from OPA Master Artist Robert Johnson. There are a few artists that have impacted my artistic life. One of them is Robert Johnson. His book, On Becoming a Painter, inspired me to pursue my passions. He truly is a Master Oil Painter, and I am honored to have him teach at PFA Studio.

This oil painting workshop will delve into the profound understanding of the essential elements of painting, a wisdom passed on through the centuries from teacher to student, master to apprentice, and artist to artist.

Brush strokes will be heavily emphasized as a means to depict form, achieve expressive power, and maintain a painting's feeling of spontaneity and life. Robert will teach the importance of understanding values, edges, light, and color to create a powerful and memorable painting. Still-life and florals will be the workshop's subject matter and the focus of Robert's demonstrations.

Students are required to bring their own supplies.

Color Boot Camp - All About Color - Concept, Perception and Usage with Susan Diehl

$675

with Susan Diehl

Calendar Sep 4, 2024 at 9 am

It is never too early or too late to learn more about color! In this workshop, students will explore color theory and color mixing, learning about pigments and their attributes, modern vs. mineral, transparency and opacity, and the color within the color.

Join us for a Five Day Workshop taught by Award Winning Artist Susan Diehl.

When: Sept 4th - Sept 8th,  9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Artists Reception at home of Jamie Lightfoot, Sept. 6th, 5:00 - 7:00 pm

All levels are welcome. Susan will be working with oil paint but all painting mediums are welcome.

The workshop will emphasize identifying the color value, intensity, and temperature of color but mostly how to see and identify it for mixing purposes.

Other topics will include color perspective, concepts for creating the illusion of space, mixing techniques, and mediums that create color effects.

Most of the first three days will be spent seated at tables in a hands-on learning environment, mixing color combinations and ranges. The goal is to study a practical way of thinking about discovery and invention in color mixing, i.e., seeing a color, conceptualizing a color, and then knowing how to mix it. Students will acquire techniques and ways to think to fill their color needs, which, through use, will become fluid and subconscious.

Students will paint simple still-life objects from life for the last two days and learn to produce the desired colors, reinforcing the concepts and techniques covered in the first three days.

About Susan Diehl

I was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. My life's journey into painting began as a small girl. My sister was always reading, and I was always drawing. I studied fine art at the University of WI, but my real training began when I moved to Seattle, WA, and met my mentor, Ron Lukas, who taught in the Russian Impressionist tradition. While living in the Northwest, I met William F. Reese, who has profoundly influenced my art career.

After 12 years of painting in that part of the country, I moved with my husband, artist Doug Diehl, and our three children to Phoenix, AZ.We joke that we moved from "dust to dust," "moss to Hoss."

I have definitely had the experience of painting many different types of landscapes. I love to travel to the ocean and paint the beaches, coastlands, and mountains in autumn and winter. I love to paint in Wisconsin when I visit my family. Deciding which motif is my favorite is virtually impossible; I am even beginning to love painting the desert.

When I am not painting the landscape, I paint still life and figures. I love to put it all together in compositions that contain figures in their environment.I believe that painting is communication without words.

The story I have to tell is simply about things that I think are visually beautiful. Whether it be a particular color combination, a pattern, a light-struck object, or a time of day, my goal is to share the beauty that I see in everyday things and grand vistas. Laundry, hanging out on the line with the sun shining through, can be as beautiful to me as the Tetons at dawn.

I hope that you will enjoy looking at my work and that my paintings allow you to have a moment when you're looking at them to think about similar times in your life when you have come across something you believe to be really beautiful.
