This two-day workshop will introduce students to the medium of encaustic.
Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to burn in” and is an art form that dates to the 5th century BC. It is used as a contemporary medium as it offers a versatile method of painting using melted beeswax and damar resin-based paint.
Participants will gain an understanding of use, safety, and support while having a hands-on opportunity to use techniques such as application, fusing, transparency, and opacity of encaustic. Denise will also demonstrate mark-making using incising and inlay and methods to add texture and image transfer.
All levels are welcome. No prior experience is necessary.
Class is limited to those aged 18+ years old.
About Denise Richards
Denise Richards is an encaustic abstract artist and instructor in the Pacific Northwest. Her interest in painting with wax began in 2008 after taking a workshop using plaster and wax. Denise has participated in solo and group shows in the Seattle area and teaches encaustic painting workshops in her home studio and various art centers.
Denise's work is characterized by its texture and luminosity. Her paintings are created with vivid layers of pigmented melted wax and a veil of quiet wax medium. She scrapes and inscribes into the surface, creating texture. Her intention is to create a sense of wonder at what lies beneath the well-worn surface.
Denise's art is a therapeutic way for her to process her life's journey. She says, "In daily life, I crave order, but in my art, I have found the more I let loose, the better the result."
